2 CONTENTSINTRODUCTION Feedback on Assignment 1 Assignment 01 provided an opportunity for you to familiarise yourself with this module. Below is a brief summary of the relevant texts in the Study Guide and the prescribed book (where appropriate) to support the answer that is deemed correct. The correct answer is stated at the beginning of each discussion. Question 1 The correct answer is 5. In Section 1.2 of the Study Guide we discuss the concept of praxis. In community psychology we aim to promote emancipation and to resist oppression. Praxis is a complex activity by which individuals create culture and society, and become critically conscious human beings. Praxis comprises a cycle of Action-Reflection-Action which is central to liberatory education. This liberation includes the following: i. self-determination and free choice (as opposed to coercion or force); ii. intentionality and purposeful living (as opposed to simply reacting to the demands of society); iii. creativity (as opposed to homogeneity, and praxis implies that in order to bring about social transformation both reflection, which is awareness, self-consciousness, sound theoretical understandings of the conditions and dynamics of oppression and illness, and action (activism, consciousness raising, demonstrating support, lobbying for change, and other forms of collective participation for social justice) are required; and iv. rational understanding and living (as opposed to being driven by chance). Therefore, praxis also involves the task of becoming critically conscious human beings. Question 2 The correct answer is 5. The discussion in Section 1.4 of the Study Guide indicates that metaphors consist of giving to one thing a name, description or characteristic that belongs by convention to something else, on the grounds of some similarity between the two (Leary, 1994). Metaphors compare things and have been described as ‘a filter, a fusion, a lens, a pretence, a screen, a tension, a displacement, a stereoscopic image, a form of linguistic play, a false identity, a contextual shift, a translation of meaning, or a twinned vision to mention only a few of its common metaphors’ (Leary, 1994, p. 4). We consider metaphors as conveyers of meaning that are vital for new learning and new ways of knowing. Question 3 The correct answer is 3. In Section 1.4 of the Study Guide we discuss what Paulo Freire (1970) called a ‘banking model of education’ whereby students are seen as empty shells that need to be filled with facts by lecturers so that they can become knowledgeable ‘experts’.
